Jones was among the first people to analyze what migration in large-scale to
the metro poles from the former colonies meant on the left side. She attributed
the West Indian migration to Britain as colonization in reverse. Masses of the
West Indian populations were moving in search of better living conditions due
to the impoverished conditions that were in the islands. The wealth of the islands
was in the hands of very few people while the rest lived under unbearable
conditions. Most of the island’s young generation felt that their only hope was
to move overseas in search of better opportunities since there were none in the
islands.

            This migration was considered forced
just not directly. The emigration occurred almost immediately after the islands
achieved political independence in the two largest islands in the West Indies;
Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. This killed all the dreams and goals of
achieving a united West Indies island that could be able to bring forth change
and impact on their own societies. Britain also encouraged the migration during
the post-war economic boom of Britain where they required cheap labor to staff
their semi-skilled and non-skilled vacancies. Many took the chance in the
attempt of making their lives better not understanding that it was only
colonization in reverse. This was later felt when racism in Britain became
immense even causing riots.

            According to Nkrumah, the particular
essence of neo-colonialism is that a particular State, which is the center of
focus, is independent in theory and has all the outward trappings of
international sovereignty but in reality its economic system which shapes its
political policies is directed from outside the state. The methods by which
this can be achieved with extreme cases being of imperial power’s troops still
safeguarding the territory and controlling the government. Neo-colonialism
however is most often practices through economic or monetary means in ways like
the neo-colonized state being obliged to take manufactured goods from the
imperialist power excluding goods from anywhere else.

            Neo-colonialism is practiced in
different ways. It may be conducted by providing funds that may be used to run
the particular State, or by providing civil servants in ranks in public offices
that can impose new policies to the State, or by controlling the monetary value
of the state over foreign exchange through implementation of banking systems
controlled by the imperialist. These imperialists in most cases are usually the
States, which formerly ruled the territories in question. The result of
neo-colonialism is the exploitation rather than the development of less
developed countries in most cases.
