Hills Like White Elephants Looking at the title, I think white elephants and hills may be difficult to pull together. First of all, how can hills be white? Unless it’s a snow hills or an iceberg. But if it’s snow hills or an iceberg, white doesn’t need to be said, clearly. And in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”, the time is in hot summer and the weather is very hot. Certainly, it’s not snow hills. The mountains, looks like a group of white elephants, is a sense of the heroine in the short novel. For readers, it is less likely to resonate. Not only that, even her boyfriend didn’t resonate. The idea of the novel is so indistinct that we can’t help but ask: why did Hemingway wrote this story? According the story, we can know Jig, heroine of the story, was pregnant and the man was upset and wanted the woman to have a miscarriage. The heroine’s answer was a little off the mark. We can feel their differences sharpened, involving their understanding of life. This was revealed by their different views on the operation. The protagonist in the novel will take is an express train from Barcelona to Madrid, but we don’t know the specific location where the story happened what is specific time and date. We don’t even know that they can ride. I think the train at here represents the change and movement, but in some ways they are afraid of this kind of change and movement. Because the change and movement is not always in the direction of the positive development. It can also marks their shift in the direction of the negative relationship, does it mean it is “a car of life”? The other thing we should be aware of is that the train stays only two minutes, very short. This limited time is a symbol of woman’s need for an early abortion. First, she couldn’t think about it for a long time, because the later she went to an abortion, the more dangerous she was. Second, I search some material of the background at that time. Abortion is illegal in Spain at that time, even in the recent time. So they must solve the problem before someone know about this. The first impression that we got was that we were in a dry, barren place in the hot sun, without trees, which emphasized the insinuation of life. And in contrast to the background is: the hero of the novel appeared in the life activities of the house, the shade in the room, dry heat. It emphasizes the symbol of the fertility of pregnant women and all around her. The comparison perfectly depict the environment and metaphor the mental activity of the two characters. According to the dialogue, Hemingway want to show the difficulty of understanding, indifference and estrangement between people. At the beginning of the novel, she took down her hat and put it on the table, indicating that she was going to get rid of something that repressed her. She wanted to express the situation clearly, just like putting a hat on the table. But the man did not directly answer her questions, changed the subject said “naive very hot”.This suggests that he wants to change the subject to talk about a simpler — – such as the weather. The two men talked briefly about the future, and the man attitude toward the fetus clearly hurt Jig. So she replied, “And you think then we’ll be all right And be happy?” This sentence indicates the dissatisfaction of Jig. I seemed to be able to hear jig’s sarcasm and see the painful expression on his back. The American, however, was numb to the question, ignoring the prospect of the future and continuing to discuss which surgery. Jig knew that her words had not attracted much attention from the man, and she resorted to emotional blackmail and sarcasm to try to make him understand her pain. “What do you mean?” “I don’ t care about me.” “Well , I care about you.” “On , yes. But I don’ t care about me…” This is the first time the man almost understand Jig’s true feelings, and even tried to let the girl know “surgery really easy”. He did not shut up until he had used seven “please” to express the extreme pain. This is a true portrayal of their mutual understanding, deep estrangement, and inability to communicate. As the conversation went on, the man spoke openly about abortion, as if to reduce their importance. He said it was a very convenient operation, “like opening a window, just putting the air in it”, not even an operation. The man said, “we can have the whole world.” The woman said, “No, we can’t. And one they take it away, you never get it back.” At the end of the conversation, the disagreement reached a level of tension. The woman said, ” I’ll scream. ” After a short pause, the train was about to arrive and the woman calmed down. The man asked, “Do you feel better?” And the woman answer, “I feel fine, there’s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine.” But considered the ending, what’s that mean? Did the woman agree with the man? There was no ending, and the story came to an abrupt end. Looking back at their conversation, the conflict is simmering, and the process is ups and downs. Both of them seem to have no objection to the abortion itself. The man said, “If you don’t want to you don’t have to.” And the woman said, “Then I’ll do it. Because I don’t care about me.” On the surface everything is right. However, the reader feels some kind of obstacle, and the characters suffer setbacks. It also means that their relationship has changed. This conversation at the station was a prelude to such a change. By the character of his story, we gradually feel Hemingway’s power. He chose the moment when the relationship between man and woman was on the verge of change, revealing the underlying psychological trends. His expression maintains the fuzziness of the event at this stage, and he does not strengthen and exaggerate what is not yet obvious. He shows us is the signs; the signs contain the possibility; the possibility is not any definite result. The simplicity of Hemingway’s style can be seen from this point. This concise, in his writing, was very clear what has multiplied. It’s a kind of present situation, and at the other, we through the probe can learn something.
