Life is meant to live with no excuses and travel with no regrets. Traveling is very popular in this 21st century. Who does not love to travel? I’m sure that most people at some point in their life will have an urge to travel especially college students. This is because they want to experience and explore new things. In Western country, westerners are happier traveling solo and have a low budget travel. For example, they will prefer a backpacking tour and explore alone to learn as much as they can. For the destination, they would more prefer to have a nature adventure. For example, hiking, …, However, for Asian people, they prefer to travel with a group of close friends and family instead of traveling alone. The purpose of their travel is to relax themselves. Nowadays, some college students will have a different mindset with other people which is they are more prefer to travel alone instead of travel with friends and family. It shows that our culture is started to change.

Purpose of study: This study aims to find out what do college students think about travel is and what makes traveling more meaningful to them. Besides that, it also aims to find out how do college students plan for their travel.

2.0 Literature review

This chapter reviews the literature on people’s travel behaviours and how do they plan for their trip. This section also explores other people’s travel behaviours when they travel as a variable to detect the differences of college student’s travel preference. The review is designed to determine the relations found in tourism research and how the findings from these prior studies are applied to college student’s travel preference. This section also examines the college student’s travel preference and reviews how previous researchers have applied travel behaviour in tourism studies.

 

According to O Tugulea, Claudia, Andreea,& Liviu (2013), this experiment aims to investigate the information sources usefulness and find out young tourists preferences in the process of planning a trip. As research methods, there used both qualitative and quantitative methods which are focus group and survey. This research has investigated sources of information used by young peoples, the utility of Internet or travel agencies in planning trip activities, as well as preferences of transportation and types of accommodation. In this research, it found out that Internet is more used by young tourists in planning trips than travel agencies are. This is because Internet is considered more useful in the documentation stage and when buying airline tickets. Besides that, young tourists are more influenced by their friends or family when planning a trip. Young tourists also prefer cars and planes as means of their transportation for a trip and hotels and guest houses as their accommodations when traveling.

 

Voice: For this research, it found out that young tourists nowadays are more prefer using Internet to plan their own trip than travel agencies are, which can relate to my research. This is because my research is to find out how do college students plan for their travel which is prefer to travel with travel agency or travel without travel agency.

 

Joseph, Huang and Cheng (2009) attempts to purify the vacation lifestyle scale and further utilizes it as the base to classify leisure travelers. The study survey was conducted of 443 tourists staying at least one night at the KenTing National Park in Taiwan. However, this study only collected 420 useful samples and the response rate of this study was 36.91%. Three groups of users merged from the cluster analysis which are Family Oriented Travelers, Social Oriented Travelers and Stylish Travelers. The study shows that the differences in trip characteristics which are the frequencies of domestic travel, the frequencies of international travel, the hotel preferences, and the average expenditure on accommodations. There are five vacation lifestyle dimensions among Taiwanese travelers which are Relaxation, First Class, Family Orientation, Social Orientation, and Outdoor Recreation. The results have found out that Family Oriented Travelers have the lowest income level among the three groups and the lowest frequencies of foreign travel but they have the highest frequencies of domestic vacation than the other two groups. They also have a relatively larger percentage of married individuals and the highest proportion had pre-school children or school-age children. For Stylish Travelers, they had higher income and education level than the other two groups, and it shows this group is more financially optimistic. Stylish Travelers are the youngest among the three groups and they have the highest proportion of young singles or young couples. Stylish Travelers were also more likely to have overseas vacations and tend to choose luxury hotels as accommodation. The average accommodation expenditure was also significantly highest among the three groups. For Social Oriented Travelers, they would prefer to choose Economy Hotel or B, spending the least amount of money on accommodations.

Voice: For this research, it might help me to differentiate my respondents belongs to which types of travelers. Although it might not really related to my research, but I can know what are the types and the differences between these travelers.

Examining Young Malaysians Travel Behaviour and Expenditure Patterns in Domestic Tourism

According to Lim, Kamal, Suhaila & Cheah (2015), this is a study about the travel behaviour and expenditure patterns among the young travellers in Malaysia. The study employed a survey questionnaire to collect data, which was adapted from standardized measures. There are total of 643 respondents has been randomly selected in the Northern States of Malaysia were involved in this study. This study aims to explore the young travellers’ behaviour and their spending patterns in relation to their travel purposes. From the survey, it was found that most of the young travellers who participated in this study preferred to stay in hotels, which was followed by relatives and friend’s house. This is because they want to save their budget. Besides that, results also showed that young travellers also spent a big fraction of their money on recreation and entertainment but they less spent on souvenirs, entrance fees and tickets as well as tours and visiting. The results of this study provide empirical evidence that young travellers’ spending patterns are particularly based on their different purposes of travel to a destination. To conclude, young travelers spend most of their travel funds on their food and beverages, shopping as well as recreation has addressed their preference during travelling.

TRAVEL MOTIVATIONS AND BEHAVIOUR OF TOURISTS TO A SOUTH AFRICAN RESORT

Research by Vuuren and Elmarie (2011), this study aims to determine the travel behaviour and more specifically the travel motivations of tourists visiting South African resorts. This research was conducted by means of the distribution of questionnaires. The sampling of this survey was based on the willingness of the tourists to complete the questionnaire and one questionnaire per family was distributed. The results revealed that the main travel motivations to the resorts are resting and relaxation, enriching and learning experiences, social interaction and certain personal values. These research results indicated that it is clear that tourism marketers are required to do research on a continuous basis in order to determine tourists’ travel behaviour to resorts. For resorts to be preferred they need to find some unique aspects that can attract visitors to the resort as tourists are always looking for something different with others. These strategies could be implemented to develop products for the specific traveling needs of the tourists. It was clear that there are various similarities with studies done in other countries and indicates the existence of universal travel motivations.

Travel behaviour: a study of older Malaysians

The result of a study conducted by Ghazali and Ong (2010), it explores about travel behaviour among older adults living in Malaysia. This research is using non-probability quota sampling, there are 1356 older adults responded to the personal interviews which carried out in Peninsular Malaysia. The main travel motivations were to spend time with friends or family and relaxation. They also preferred to visit familiar destinations such as big cities. The majority of the respondents preferred to travel in tour groups instead of traveling alone. With limited budgets and failing health, many older adults are concerned about the issues of cost, health and safety when travelling. Many of the older Malaysians are interested to visit historical and religious sites when traveling. The results show that Malays (Muslim) were more likely than other ethnics to travel for religious motivations and to visit religious places. However, for Chinese (Buddhists), they were more likely than other ethnic groups to travel for relaxation, they want to give themselves a treat and as a learning experience. Besides that, they were also more likely than other ethnic groups to visit historical sites, big cities, hills and island resorts.

Voice: This research is about how older generation in Malaysia prefer to travel, but my research is about how do college students which is young adults prefer to travel. Therefore, there is a big difference between older generation travel preference and younger generation travel preference. I can use this research to find out what is the differences between them.

 

There are many research articles about how do people travel and their travel behaviour but from these 5 articles, I found out that my research is different with them because mine is to find out how today’s college students prefer to travel. Therefore, my research is to fill up to gap between older Malaysians and their travel behaviours.

 

3.0 Methodology

In this research paper, all the respondents are young peoples which defined as college students who between 18-28 years old and currently studying at Sunway College. This is because this research only aims to find out college students’ travel preference. Besides that, the number of the participants for this research will be only 30 students and the survey questions will send it out through online which is google docs. There are two types of research methods which are quantitative methods and qualitative methods. The research design I chose for this study is quantitative in nature, which means I only use an online survey to find out the result of this research. Quantitative methods will be used to measure and analyze the college students and their preference. The result of this research all depends on the number, which means if most of the college students choose that as their answer then it will be the results of my research.

 

 

4.0 Findings and Discussion

 

This chart has clearly showed that most of the college students do set a budget for their travel. From one of the article of my literature review which is Lim, Kamal, Suhaila & Cheah (2015) said that students have low income, they relied mainly on their scholarship and student loans which is PTPTN to fund their travelling activities, but they also have high interest in travelling. It shows that most of the college students are interested in travelling but they do not have much income for them to spend. Therefore, they have to set a budget for their travel in order to limit their expenditure when they are traveling. This explained that why 60% of my respondents do set a budget for their travel. However, the 40% of my respondents probably is because their parents will support the expenses of their travel, so they do not need to worry about any financial problem and also no need to set a budget for their travel.

 

I like to travel with friends and family – there are more than half give a scale of 4, which mean they prefer to travel with friends/family

On a scale of 1-4, college students evaluated the extent to which they agree or disagree (1 – Strongly disagree; 2 – Disagree; 3 – Agree; 4 – Strongly agree). For this statement, there are 53.3% of the respondents strongly agree, 36.7% agree, 10% disagree and none of them strongly disagree. It means that college students are prefer to travel with friends and family instead of traveling alone. Most of them prefer to travel with friends or family probably is because of traveling with friends or family can maintain and improve the quality of relationships.

From this chart, we can see that 83.3% of college students are prefer to travel without travel agency and 16.7% of them prefer to travel with travel agency. Most of the respondents choose to travel without travel agency. This is because advancement of technology, they can search every information they want easily and book hotels anytime through Internet. The result of the research from one of my literature review which is O Tugulea, Claudia, Andreea,& Liviu (2013), it showed that Internet is more useful tools in planning a trip than the travel agencies do. Therefore, today’s college students will more prefer to travel without travel agency and plan for their own trip using Internet.

There are 50% which is half of the respondents travel because they want to explore and have an adventure, and unsurprisingly 40% of them travel for relaxing, 6.7% travel for building relationship and 3.3% travel for food. Research by Vuuren and Elmarie (2011) found that the motives of tourists travel were to rest and relax, to partake in enriching and learning experiences, social interaction and certain personal values. For my research, I found out that today’s college students are more adventurous as they are prefer to travel for exploring and having an adventure instead of relaxing and rejuvenating. This is because they are energetic as they are still young and healthy. Thus, they are also curious about things that they have not been through. Therefore, they travel for exploring and having an adventure. However, for older adults, they are not as energetic as young adults, so they travel for relaxing. Research by Ghazali and Ong (2010), it explores about travel behaviours among older adults living in Malaysia. It found out that older adults in Malaysia are travel for relaxation and visiting friends or relatives. From the responses, it tells us that we should go for exploring and having an adventure when we are still young and energetic.

This chart showed that there are 56.7% of the college students prefer going to beach, 53.3% prefer going to famous travel destination, 43.3% prefer going to shopping mall, 33.3% prefer going to nature adventure and 23.3% prefer going to museums and monuments. Results from Lim, Kamal, Suhaila & Cheah (2015) found that, young travellers spent most of their money on food and beverage and shopping. Results also showed that young travellers also spent a big fraction of their money on recreation and entertainment but they spent less on souvenirs, museums entrance fees and tickets as well as tours and visiting. From this research, it explains that most of the college students are more prefer going to beach is because there are many exciting activities that we can do at the beach such as surfing, scuba diving, parasailing and so on which is also counted as exploring and having an adventure. College students spent less on museums entrance fees is because they think that museums and monuments is too boring so they less likely going to museums and monuments.

 

 

 

 

 

 

5.0 Conclusion

This purpose of this research study is to find out what makes traveling more meaningful to today’s college students and how do they plan for their travel. The results revealed that college students are more prefer having a budget trip. As having a trip may cost them money, so college students would love to spend their money in a propriate ways which are exploring and having an adventure when they travel. College students may also prefer to travel without travel agency and they would also love to travel along with their friends and family. As the results of this research, I had concluded that college students make their travelling time much more meaningful as it has mentioned above college student willing to travel with their friends and family with could help them to strengthen their relationship. Besides that, college student will have a budget trip and this could conclude that college student will know how to control their money while spending on a trip and also saving money to have a budget trip. Moreover, before college students want to go for travelling, they will set a budget and this is one of the measure that they plan for their trip. Then, college students will rely on the internet instead of travel agency to look for the destination that suit their adventurous style for them to enjoy in such way. This is because Internet may provide more information than travel agencies do. It proved that there is a big potential in the youth travel market in Malaysia.

 

5.1 Limitations

The limitations for this research is it is only conducted 30 respondents for this research which is only a small amount of college students, so it might not be sufficient to point out an exact outcome. Besides that, an extension of study should also be carry out in qualitative interview to obtain others dimensions of criteria which is not only limit to Sunway College students.

 

5.2 Suggestion

Since there are limitations for this research, I think that for the future research, it shall be carried out to study the differences of travel preference between Asian people and Westerners, not only college students. The future research also can be conducted on a wider population such as different ages in Malaysia so as to see any different among different ages and
